Six things that decide whether it lasts
- Zip brandA cheap zip is the first thing to go and the hardest to replace. Ours are YKK on every pack above $40.
- Strap anchorsLook for bar tacked stitching where the straps meet the body. That joint carries the whole load.
- Base panelThe bottom wears through first, especially with a heavy laptop. A coated or doubled base doubles the life.
- Suspended laptop sleeveIf the sleeve touches the base, every kerb you step off goes straight into your screen.
- Empty weightA 25 L pack that weighs 3 lb empty has eaten a quarter of what you wanted to carry.

Asked before every order
How many litres do I actually need?
For a laptop and a day of work, 18 to 22 L. For a student carrying books as well, 22 to 26 L. For a weekend away with no checked bag, 35 L. For a week or more, 45 L. Anything above 45 L is a trail pack, not a travel pack, and will not fit in an overhead locker. The calculator above gives you a number for your own case.
Will it fit as airline carry on?
The 35 L pack is cut to the standard US carry on allowance and fits every major domestic carrier. The 45 L fits zipped in on most airlines and needs checking when expanded. Above that, check it. Allowances vary, so measure against your airline's stated dimensions rather than trusting a litre figure.
Which bags take a 17 in laptop?
The 26 L laptop pack, the 45 L expandable travel pack, the complete travel kit and the 26 L hard shell. Everything else tops out at 16 in. A 17 in machine in a 15 in sleeve puts pressure on the corners of the screen, so do not force it.
Is leather worth the extra?
Only if you want it to look better with age and you will actually care for it twice a year. Leather is heavier, it marks, and it does not like sustained rain. If you commute in a wet climate or you want the lightest possible bag, buy the coated nylon and spend the difference on something else.
What if a buckle snaps?
Email us which part it is and we post a replacement free, for the life of the bag rather than just the warranty, and without a receipt. Buckles, sternum clips, strap keepers and zip pulls are all stocked.
